last week i went into a depressive episode and ended up, for the first time since i started doing these, with no roundup to post. i lay miserably in the heat, watched wimbledon (becoming gradually more and more miserable as all of my favourite players eventually lost), watched two coen brothers films (the big lebowski - which i don't think i quite fully understood, but it sure was an experience; and my beloved o brother, where art thou?), and took out an obscene number of library books. this week i am trying to return to some semblance of normality, or at least to listen to a podcast without rewinding it 6 times and giving up.
the female artists turning internet slop into fine art, interviews by smizzo for polyester zine
strange aeons reads that book about the dangerous crow boy who hates plastic, but as it turns out, doesn't actually eat it.
aspen in the moment explains the trademarking scandal of Hot Girls Read. personally, i'm a fan of Cold Women Illiteracy
shortspeare explains the 9/11 to twilight to "zoe kravitz is a predator" tweet pipeline. this is the kind of unhinged investigative reporting and weird pipleine i live for
kaz rowe confirms my long-held theory that spiritualists are always at the scene with a video about the paranormal terrors of wisconsin. "the catholics just have really haunted swag, okay?"
i also watched rowan ellis's exploration of the relationship between food and the far-right and abby cox's justifiably angry tirade against the past, present, and future of abusing child stars for profit
90s angel craze by american hysteria, which asks the bold question: why were we, in the 1990s, in the aaaaarms of the angels?
relistened to behind the bastards' episodes on the zizians (part 1 & 2 rewind, parts 3 & 4 rewind). why is it when something bad happens, it's always harry potter at the scene of the crime?
i was also recommended the podcast cool people who do cool stuff and thought it might be nice to balance out my knowledge (it's mostly bastards at this point), so i listened to parts one and two about homosexuality in the medieval ottoman empire
as well as parts one and part two about the movement against corporal punishment of childreni went back and listened to a bunch of songs i liked by (sandy) alex g, now just alex g: poison root and sportstar from the album rocket, and treehouse, which i didn't hear until recently but am absolutely obsessed with; i think there's something incredibly emotionally evocative about it, from the instrumental to emily yacina's vocals (i particularly enjoy the way she enunciates "really loud" and "funny"). it's no surprise to me that he was picked out to write the soundtrack to we're all going to the world's fair and i saw the tv glow, two films that also capture something of that isolated teenage experience (especially the former).
also: this time by land of talk.
i also finished my coen brothers beat by watching inside llewyn davis, which is both funny and miserable. oscar isaac is 1) very handsome, 2) very good in the role, and 3) has a wonderful voice, i really love his rendition of green green rocky road.
july 14th was spongebob day so i celebrated by watching a selection of random spongebob episodes! i say this all the time to my friends, but it's unbelievable to me how you can put on essentially any pre-spongebob movie episode and there will be at least one, if not several, iconic memes and lines. i love spongebob and its cultural impact is absolutely incredible; we really are all goofy goobers, yeah :)
